Speaking on Wednesday in Abuja at the Jerry Eze Foundation Business Grant Award Ceremony, Olukoyede disclosed that the probe was initiated following intelligence reports and multiple petitions concerning large inflows of foreign currencies into the cleric’s domiciliary account.
He explained that investigators flagged unusual transactions involving dollars and pounds coming from several countries, prompting the commission to launch a full-scale inquiry. “We work by intelligence, we work by petitions,” Olukoyede said, noting that the volume and origin of the funds raised initial suspicion.
According to the EFCC chairman, the commission thoroughly examined the financial records linked to the pastor before inviting him for questioning. However, after reviewing the findings and engaging directly with Eze, the agency concluded that there was no evidence of wrongdoing.
Olukoyede revealed that instead of confronting the cleric with allegations, he commended him after the investigation had already established his innocence.
The statement drew applause from attendees at the event, where Eze was present and acknowledged the remarks.
Despite clearing the pastor, the EFCC boss emphasized that the commission would continue to monitor financial activities where necessary as part of its preventive mandate.
He reiterated that the agency’s role extends beyond enforcement to also recognising individuals who demonstrate integrity.
Olukoyede also raised concerns about misconduct among some religious leaders, stating that the commission has investigated and secured convictions against clerics involved in fraudulent practices.
He urged faith-based institutions to uphold transparency and accountability, stressing that places of worship must not be used as fronts for illicit activities.
The development highlights ongoing scrutiny of financial flows within religious organisations in Nigeria, as authorities continue efforts to combat corruption while maintaining public trust.
