The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially recognised the faction of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) backed by Nyesom Wike, marking a significant development in the party’s ongoing leadership crisis.
The update was reflected on INEC’s official platform, where the newly constituted leadership was published.
According to the electoral body, Abdulrahman Mohammed has been listed as the PDP’s national chairman.
He and other members of the National Working Committee (NWC) emerged from the party’s convention held at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium.
The INEC recognises Wike PDP development signals a major shift in the party’s internal power dynamics.
The PDP has been deeply divided into rival factions, with another group led by Kabiru Turaki challenging the legitimacy of the convention.
The Turaki-led faction had approached the Supreme Court seeking to stop the Wike-backed convention from holding.
Speaking at the convention, Wike declared that the party had overcome its leadership crisis.
“We fought and returned the party to its rightful owners,” he said.
He credited grassroots members for keeping the party stable despite internal disagreements.
Wike noted that while some elite members abandoned the party during the crisis, grassroots supporters remained committed.
“Rank-and-file supporters remained steadfast,” he added.
The INEC recognises Wike PDP move could have far-reaching implications for the party’s structure and its preparations for the 2027 general elections.
Political observers say the recognition may influence future alignments within the opposition.
