Seven Greek supporters of PAOK Football Club have lost their lives in a fatal traffic accident in western Romania, the Greek embassy in the country confirmed on Tuesday.
The victims were traveling in a van heading to France when it was involved in a head-on collision at the village of Lugojel, located in Timis County, close to the city of Timisoara.
Greek embassy sources disclosed that the passengers were en route across Europe when the crash occurred, resulting in multiple fatalities at the scene.
Following the incident, officials of the Greek embassy in Romania announced that a delegation would depart from Bucharest to the accident site, which is approximately seven hours away by road, to assess the situation and provide consular assistance.
Emergency responders in Romania were said to have arrived promptly at the scene, while investigations into the cause of the accident are ongoing.
The tragic incident has sparked mourning among football fans in Greece, particularly supporters of PAOK, one of the country’s most popular clubs.
As of press time, Romanian authorities had yet to release further details on the circumstances surrounding the collision.
