Nigeria’s electricity grid has suffered another setback after the national power system collapsed on Tuesday morning at about 11 a.m., plunging homes and businesses across the country into darkness for the second time in less than one month.
The nation’s electricity grid collapsed again on Tuesday morning, leaving millions of Nigerians without power and raising fresh concerns over the stability of the country’s energy infrastructure.
The latest incident occurred at about 11 a.m., marking the second system failure within one month, as the last grid collapse was recorded just four days earlier, according to industry data.
Information obtained from the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO)—an arm of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) responsible for managing grid stability—showed that total electricity generation from just two generating companies (GENCOs) dropped sharply to 219 megawatts (MW) at the time of filing this report.
However, reacting to the development, the Head of Communications at NISO, Mr. Kazah Akau, downplayed reports of a full system collapse, describing the incident as a temporary disruption.
“It is not really a collapse but a little disturbance. We are going to release a statement soon. What happened is not actually a collapse,” Akau said during a phone conversation.
Meanwhile, data on electricity distribution revealed that the combined load allocation across Nigeria’s 11 Distribution Companies (DisCos) stood at 220MW.
According to the load profile, Benin DisCo recorded the highest allocation with 65MW, followed by Ibadan DisCo at 50MW. Ikeja and Kaduna DisCos each received 40MW, while Abuja DisCo had the lowest allocation of 25MW.
The repeated grid disruptions have continued to frustrate households and businesses, many of which rely heavily on alternative power sources amid rising fuel and energy costs.
