Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has given the green light for the complete payment of compensation to the owners of 130 structures slated for demolition in Umuahia, as part of the construction of a 6-lane Ossah-Okpara square road.
Property owners in the affected areas will begin receiving their compensation payments via credit alerts starting on September 22, 2023. The State's Commissioner for Lands and Housing,
Chika Chukwumerije, the State’s Commissioner for Lands and Housing assured property owners that only designated structures would be demolished, and the compensation would follow estate valuers' recommendations.
He emphasized that this policy aims to develop Umuahia without displacing villagers, and the exact compensation amounts will not be disclosed to protect beneficiaries.
Villagers, in their requests, appealed for full and fair compensation to facilitate the construction of new buildings and requested additional time to relocate to new sites.
