Joseph Wayas, former Senate President, has died at the age of 83

Senator Joseph Wayas, Nigeria's second republic Senate President, died in a London hospital on Wednesday. 

He had reached the age of 80 years. From 1979 to 1983, Wayas served as Senate President. Wayas was born on May 21, 1941, in Basang, Cross River State, and attended Onitsha's Dennis Memorial Grammar School. 

He went to Higher Tottenham Technical College in London, West Bronwich College of Commerce, Science and Technology in Birmingham, and Aston University in Birmingham to study. 

Following his schooling, he returned to Nigeria and worked for many organizations in Nigeria and the United Kingdom as a manager or controller from 1960 to 1969. He was a member of the Lincoln University's Society of International Affairs until his death.

From 1972 to 1974, Wayas worked for the Federal Government as the Commissioner for Transport for the South-Eastern State, which is now divided into Akwa Ibom and Cross River states. In 1977-78, he was a member of the Constituent Assembly.
