United States President Donald Trump

United States President Donald Trump has ignited intense debate across the global technology sector after declaring that fears surrounding artificial intelligence safety are a "hoax" and rejecting calls for regulatory oversight.

In a series of social media posts, Trump dismissed existential warnings about advanced AI as a "sick conspiracy" aimed at stalling American innovation, directly framing the Donald Trump AI safety hoax narrative around geopolitical competition.

Comparing safety warnings to climate change and previous political investigations, the president styled himself "the Hoax Buster" and insisted the only required guardrail is a "strong and smart" president.

Trump argued that slowing domestic AI development or data center growth would primarily benefit China, prompting Chinese state media to note that Washington's heightened anxiety over China's AI progress appears to be distorting its national policy priorities.

The administration's stance directly counters a mounting push for safety controls from leading AI executives and researchers. Anthropic co-founder Jack Clark stated that mandatory, third-party verifiable "kill switches" may become necessary to shut down dangerous models if the technology moves out of human control.

The call for safeguards comes amid growing internal alarm at frontier labs, where researchers including Evan Hubinger and Jacob Coxon have highlighted catastrophic risks associated with unaligned systems.

In response to these vulnerabilities, Anthropic chief executive Dario Amodei, OpenAI's Sam Altman, and xAI's Elon Musk have expressed support for industry-wide deceleration and independent monitoring, while Microsoft AI chief Mustafa Suleyman announced new "humanist AI" guidelines designed to maintain strict human agency over synthetic intelligence.

As anxiety over unchecked development sparked a sell-off in major tech stocks, momentum for bipartisan political intervention is building in Washington. Progressive Senator Bernie Sanders warned of potential existential threats to humanity and called for immediate steps to halt uncontrolled AI growth.

Highlighting the unusual political alignment around the issue, Sanders is set to co-headline the "Pro-Human Assembly" alongside former Trump strategist Steve Bannon to advocate for human-centric AI development standards.

Despite tech leaders insisting that safety protocols can be implemented without sacrificing commercial advantage, the stark contrast between Silicon Valley's call for guardrails and the White House's deregulatory position signals an intensifying battle over the future of artificial intelligence governance.
