Former Labour Party presidential running mate Datti Baba-Ahmed has explained that he left Peter Obi because the former presidential candidate had no clear plan for Nigeria.
Datti was Obi’s running mate during the 2023 presidential election under the platform of the Labour Party. Following the election, Obi moved to the African Democratic Congress before later joining the Nigeria Democratic Congress.
However, Datti said he would not unfairly promote Obi, Atiku Abubakar and other opposition politicians at the expense of President Bola Tinubu.
Speaking during an interview on Symfoni TV, Datti said he believed political support should be based on fairness and a clear national agenda.
“I won’t unfairly help promote Baba Atiku and Peter Obi and others just for no good reason because we need to be fair in life, and that’s what I stand for,” he said.
Datti explained that he worked hard for Obi during the 2023 election but later became concerned about the absence of a clear plan for the country.
“I worked really hard for Peter Obi, but his team doesn’t remember things very well. I let Peter Obi know that he needs to come up with a plan since he doesn’t have one yet,” he stated.
The former vice-presidential candidate stressed that Obi did not abandon him, insisting that he was the one who decided to leave because of his concerns about Obi’s political direction.
“Peter Obi didn’t abandon me; I left because he doesn’t have a plan for Nigeria. Peter Obi knows I stood for him. I still stand by him. It’s sad to see the moves he made. But it is his choice,” Datti added.
His comments come amid renewed political realignments ahead of the 2027 general election, with opposition politicians considering different platforms and alliances.
