ASUU Declares Indefinite Strike at Abia State University

The Academic Staff Union of Universities chapter at Abia State University, Uturu, has declared a total, comprehensive, and indefinite strike effective Tuesday, August 11, 2026, over the continued failure of the Alex Otti-led state government and the university management to implement an agreement reached between ASUU and the Federal Government in December 2025.

The ASUU action was announced through an official press release made available to journalists in Umuahia, signed by Branch Chairman Dr. Chidi S. Mba and Secretary Dr. Victor U. Obisike, who confirmed that all academic staff had been directed to withdraw their services completely with immediate effect.

The agreement at the heart of the dispute was signed by ASUU and the Federal Government on December 23, 2025, and was scheduled to take effect from January 1, 2026.

According to the union, despite repeated engagements with the Abia State Government and the university administration, formal presentations of the agreement, and the serving of a 21-day ultimatum, no meaningful response was received from either party.

The branch described the inaction as a clear and deliberate failure to honour a binding commitment to academic staff, leaving the union with no option other than withdrawing labour in pursuit of welfare and institutional demands that had already been agreed at the federal level and simply required implementation at the state and institutional level.

The directive covers all categories of union participation, with members specifically instructed to stay away from statutory meetings of any kind — including senate meetings and faculty board sittings — in addition to withdrawing from all teaching, research, and administrative duties.

The firmness of the directive signals that the branch leadership does not regard the action as a short-term pressure measure but as a sustained withdrawal until the state government and university management engage meaningfully with the outstanding demands.

The branch urged members to remain united, resolute, and committed throughout the process, promising to issue further updates as the situation develops.

For students of Abia State University and their families, the ASUU ABSU strike Abia State University 2026 announcement represents an immediate disruption to academic activities at an institution already navigating the broader pressures facing Nigerian state universities.

Governor Alex Otti’s administration, which came to power with significant public goodwill and a stated commitment to education and governance reform, now faces a direct test of that commitment — one that can only pass by translating the December 2025 agreement from a signed document into lived reality for the academic staff who teach at one of the state’s primary higher education institutions.

The union has made its position unambiguous, and the next move belongs entirely to the government.
