Minister of Works David Umahi has written to the Ebonyi State Police Command, requesting a comprehensive autopsy on Mary Habila, the nurse who died at his residence in Umunaga, Uburu, Ohaozara Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, on June 27, 2026.

The request was contained in a letter dated July 15 and signed by Umahi’s counsel, Roy Nwaeze, to the Commissioner of Police in Ebonyi State.

According to the letter, Mary Habila was a staff member of the David Umahi Federal University of Medical Sciences, Uburu, who had been seconded to the Federal Ministry of Works in Mabushi, Abuja.

The letter clarified that the deceased did not live in the same building as the minister.

It explained that the building where the incident occurred was reserved exclusively for members of Umahi’s staff and others working with him.

According to the lawyer, on the night of her death, Mary Habila and another woman identified as a physiotherapist were the only occupants of the building.

Umahi’s legal team stated that the request for an autopsy, along with the temporary preservation of the deceased’s body, is intended to ensure transparency and support an ongoing investigation.

The letter urged the Nigeria Police Force to engage qualified forensic pathologists to conduct a thorough and independent examination.

According to the request, the autopsy is expected to scientifically determine the actual cause of death and clarify the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The minister’s legal team maintained that the request is in the interest of justice, transparency and the proper administration of criminal justice.
