Harry Kane scored twice against DR Congo to inspire England to a dramatic 2-1 comeback victory and secure a place in the FIFA World Cup round of 16 after an intense contest in Atlanta.

England looked to be heading for one of the biggest upsets in World Cup history after Brian Cipenga gave the Democratic Republic of Congo a surprise early lead, leaving Thomas Tuchel's side on the brink of elimination.

The Three Lions struggled to find their rhythm for much of the match as DR Congo defended resolutely and created several dangerous opportunities of their own.

Congo took the lead after Djed Spence failed to deal with a cross from Chancel Mbemba, allowing Cipenga to fire a powerful low shot past goalkeeper Jordan Pickford, who was unable to keep the effort out.

England responded with increased pressure before halftime, with Jude Bellingham forcing goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi into an excellent save. Marcus Rashford also came close after his effort was brilliantly cleared off the goal line by Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

The African side nearly doubled their advantage before the break when Yoane Wissa struck the outside of the post from close range, while Mpasi continued his outstanding performance by denying both Bellingham and Kane with crucial saves.

As time began to run out, England manager Thomas Tuchel introduced Bukayo Saka, Anthony Gordon and Eberechi Eze in a bid to revive his side's attack.

The substitutions paid off as Gordon delivered a pinpoint cross that allowed Harry Kane to head home the equaliser with 15 minutes remaining.

Just 11 minutes later, Gordon was again involved as Kane collected the ball before smashing a powerful shot into the roof of the net to complete England's remarkable comeback and seal victory.

The England captain's brace took his tally to 13 FIFA World Cup goals and 84 international goals, strengthening his position among the tournament's leading scorers and keeping him firmly in contention for the Golden Boot.

England will now face Mexico in the FIFA World Cup round of 16 at the iconic Estadio Azteca on Sunday. However, Tuchel's side will know they must produce a much-improved performance if they hope to continue their quest to win England's first major international trophy since 1966.

For DR Congo, the defeat brought an emotional end to a memorable World Cup campaign. The Leopards, appearing at the tournament for the first time in 52 years, exceeded expectations by reaching the knockout stage and pushing one of the competition's favourites to the limit.
