In a statement issued on July 8, 2026, by the Acting Director of Corporate Communications, Hakama Sidi Ali, the apex bank said both the standard ₦100 banknote and the commemorative ₦100 centenary banknote are valid for all financial transactions nationwide.
According to the CBN, the commemorative ₦100 banknote, introduced to celebrate Nigeria’s centenary, did not replace the existing standard ₦100 note. Instead, both versions continue to circulate legally and should be accepted without discrimination.
The bank warned that rejecting the standard ₦100 banknote is a violation of the provisions of the CBN Act and could undermine public confidence in Nigeria’s currency.
The apex bank cautioned individuals, businesses, financial institutions and other economic stakeholders against refusing the note, stressing that appropriate enforcement measures would be taken against anyone found violating the law.
The CBN also reiterated its commitment to protecting the integrity of the naira, maintaining public confidence in all officially issued banknotes and ensuring smooth currency circulation throughout the country.
Members of the public were advised to continue accepting all banknotes legally issued by the Central Bank of Nigeria for payments and commercial transactions.
The bank further encouraged anyone seeking clarification on the status of Nigerian banknotes to contact the CBN through its official communication channels.
The clarification comes amid reports that some traders and businesses have mistakenly rejected the standard ₦100 note, believing only the commemorative centenary version remains valid.
