Speaking ahead of pre-season training at the AXA Training Centre, Iraola said his primary focus remains getting the players ready, building a strong team spirit, and strengthening the squad through the transfer market.
The Spaniard explained that while Edwards’ departure is unfortunate, it will have little impact on his day-to-day responsibilities as head coach.
“I have to be honest, I’m focused on my job, which is a massive one in terms of getting ready to start working with the players, trying to find the best position for every player, and creating a collective atmosphere where they can perform,” Iraola said.
He added that his daily work is centred more on transfers and squad development than boardroom changes.
Iraola revealed that he has maintained regular communication with Liverpool sporting director Richard Hughes, Fenway Sports Group president Mike Gordon, and Michael Edwards during the transition.
Describing Edwards as “super-smart,” the Liverpool boss praised the outgoing football executive and said he respected the reasons behind his decision to step away.
“I’ve spoken to Michael Edwards, and he seems super-smart. It’s unfortunate he’s not going to continue with us, but he explained his decision and his reasons very well,” he said.
Despite Edwards’ exit, Iraola believes the situation is primarily an ownership matter rather than one that will directly affect the coaching staff.
The Liverpool manager also disclosed that FSG had been transparent with him from the beginning about the challenges facing the club.
According to Iraola, the club’s owners admitted that “everything is not perfect” and warned him that Liverpool would have to deal with several issues, including replacing key players, managing injuries, and rebuilding the squad.
However, he stressed that the ownership group is committed to solving those problems and maximising the quality already available within the team.
“They told me everything is not perfect. We would have some challenges, we would have to replace important players leaving, and we have some injuries, but we are here to solve these kinds of problems and try to maximise what we have,” Iraola said.
The Liverpool coach expressed confidence in the squad currently at his disposal, describing it as a strong group capable of competing at the highest level.
As pre-season preparations gather pace, Iraola will be aiming to restore Liverpool’s consistency and competitiveness while navigating a period of transition both on and off the pitch.
