Liverpool have completed the move for Spanish winger Victor Munoz, with the 22-year-old set to become the first signing of new head coach Andoni Iraola’s era at Anfield.
The deal was finalised after the player completed his medical on Wednesday and agreed a six-year contract with the Premier League champions in a deal worth around £34.5 million.
The Reds moved quickly to secure Munoz’s services after activating the release clause in his contract with Osasuna.
The agreement also includes a significant payment to Real Madrid, who sold the youngster last summer and retained a 50 per cent sell-on clause.
Liverpool reportedly faced strong competition for the Spain international, with Newcastle United among the clubs interested in signing him.
Bayer Leverkusen, Manchester United, and Real Madrid were also said to have monitored the player’s situation.
New Liverpool head coach Andoni Iraola played a key role in pushing for the deal, having admired Munoz’s development and qualities from his time in Spanish football.
Discussions between Iraola and Liverpool’s recruitment department helped accelerate the club’s pursuit of the talented forward.
The club’s interest in Munoz increased after initial talks between the manager and recruitment officials, with Iraola identifying the player as a strong fit for his plans at Liverpool.
Munoz’s medical was completed while he was with the Spain squad in the United States for the World Cup.
Liverpool received permission from the Spain Football Federation to carry out the assessment before finalising the transfer.
Barcelona had also shown interest in the player before completing their move for England international Anthony Gordon. However, Real Madrid’s matching rights agreement with Osasuna complicated any potential move from their La Liga rivals.
The arrival of Munoz marks the beginning of a new chapter for Liverpool under Iraola, who is looking to build a squad capable of competing for major trophies in the coming seasons.
