The US-Iran peace agreement moved a step closer to implementation after President Donald Trump signed a memorandum of understanding aimed at ending the conflict between the United States and Iran.

Trump signed the document on Wednesday, June 17, during a visit to the Palace of Versailles in France, shortly before attending a dinner hosted by French President Emmanuel Macron.

The development marks a significant diplomatic milestone after months of heightened tensions and military confrontations in the Middle East.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian also signed the agreement from Tehran, while US Vice President JD Vance is expected to formally endorse the deal during a ceremony scheduled to take place in Geneva on Friday.

Speaking after the signing, Trump defended the US-Iran peace agreement, arguing that it would help stabilize global markets and prevent further economic disruptions.

According to the US president, the agreement was necessary to avoid a broader global economic crisis and ensure the reopening of critical trade routes, including the Strait of Hormuz, a vital channel for international oil shipments.

The deal reportedly includes several economic incentives for Iran. These include the lifting of a US naval blockade on Iranian ports, waivers allowing Iranian crude oil exports, and the possibility of future sanctions relief.

Reports also indicate plans for a reconstruction fund worth approximately $300 billion to support Iran's economic recovery, funded by regional partners.

In exchange, Iran is expected to reaffirm its commitment not to pursue nuclear weapons and to exercise restraint regarding its regional allies, including Hezbollah in Lebanon.

Iran's chief negotiator, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, offered a different perspective on the agreement, describing it as evidence of what he called a failure of US policy toward Iran.

He said history would ultimately judge the outcome of the negotiations. Another key aspect of the US-Iran peace agreement is the temporary toll-free passage of ships through the Strait of Hormuz for a period of 60 days.

However, Iranian officials have indicated that charges could be introduced after the expiration of that period.

The agreement is being closely watched by governments, investors, and international organizations, as it could significantly impact global energy markets, regional security, and diplomatic relations in the Middle East.
