The suspects, identified as 84-year-old Godfrey Orji and 75-year-old Godwin Obulunbiya Obiora, are currently in NDLEA custody and are expected to face prosecution after investigations are concluded.
According to reports, Godwin Obulunbiya Obiora was arrested on June 19, 2026, following intelligence indicating that he was allegedly selling illicit substances to young students and other customers from his patent medicine store located along Club Road in Umuahia.
During a search of the premises, NDLEA operatives reportedly recovered 4.64 kilograms of opioids, including tramadol and diazepam.
In a separate incident, Godfrey Orji, a pensioner, was allegedly caught supplying illicit drugs to two teenage students of Saint Silas Secondary School, Old Umuahia.
School security personnel reportedly apprehended the suspect and handed him over to the police before the case was transferred to the NDLEA for further investigation.
NDLEA spokesperson, Femi Babafemi, disclosed that one of the students involved, a 15-year-old Senior Secondary School Two (SS2) student, allegedly admitted that the 84-year-old suspect supplied him with the drugs.
The student reportedly claimed that he not only consumed the substances but also sold them to other students within the school environment.
The development has sparked concerns about the growing threat of drug abuse among teenagers and the role of drug suppliers targeting young people in educational institutions.
While the two elderly suspects are expected to have their day in court, NDLEA officials revealed that the affected students have been enrolled in counselling and rehabilitation programmes aimed at helping them overcome substance abuse.
The agency reiterated its commitment to combating drug trafficking and protecting young Nigerians from the dangers associated with illicit drug use.
Authorities have also urged parents, teachers and community leaders to remain vigilant and work together to prevent the spread of drug abuse among youths.
