A Nigerian lady’s reliance on viral internet warnings completely backfired during a recent outing, leaving her wishing the ground would open up and swallow her.
Taking to social media on Tuesday, June 16, 2026, the lady shared a deeply embarrassing story of how her fear of being left with a massive restaurant bill caused her to falsely accuse her date of running away.
The awkward situation began shortly after the pair arrived at the restaurant. The young man informed her that he wasn't hungry at the moment, which left her as the only one placing an order.
A short while later, the man stood up from the table, explaining that he needed to use the restroom. Having read numerous viral threads on X (formerly Twitter) about men vanishing mid-date and leaving women to foot the entire bill, her internal alarm bells instantly went off.
Convinced she was about to become the latest internet cautionary tale, she quickly flagged down the waiter, paid for her portion of the bill, and ordered the staff to immediately pack her food into a takeaway container so she could make a swift exit.
However, her calculated escape plan collapsed when her date walked straight back from the restroom, completely unaware of the panic he had caused. He was met with the sight of her standing up with her food already packed away.
“He came back to see my food packed and he said, ‘Why did you pack the food or is this another one?’ I told him I thought he wasn’t coming back," the lady recalled. "He felt offended for thinking he wasn’t coming back, so he asked to pay. I said I had paid and I was about to leave.”
Deeply insulted by the insinuation that he couldn't afford a standard meal, the man completely lost his temper, creating a massive scene inside the establishment. “He just blurted, ‘Me run away because of 30k food?? Are you mad???’" the lady wrote. "Omo, everybody for that setting turned and were looking at us. Shame wear me face cap.
I wished the ground could open so I can seek asylum in it.” The viral confession has since sparked a wave of amusement and debate online.
While many netizens sympathized with her caution—noting that "restaurant abandonment" is a very real trend in modern dating—the vast majority pointed out that her extreme paranoia caused her to jump the gun far too quickly, turning a completely normal restroom break into an unforgettable public disaster.
