The Kano State Government has approved N1.5 billion for a large-scale mass wedding programme aimed at supporting 3,000 couples across the state.

The announcement was made by the Commander-General of the Kano State Hisbah Board, Sheikh Ibrahim Daurawa, during a media briefing on preparations for the event.

According to Daurawa, the allocated funds will cover various expenses associated with the programme, including dowries, furniture, food items, clothing materials, and financial support for participating couples.

He disclosed that each bride selected for the programme will receive a capital grant of N100,000 to help begin married life and support small-scale economic activities.

The Kano State mass wedding initiative is being coordinated by the Hisbah Board in partnership with the State Ministry of Health.

As part of the process, all prospective couples are undergoing mandatory medical examinations.

The screenings include tests for HIV, hepatitis, genotype compatibility, pregnancy status, and other sexually transmitted diseases to ensure the health and well-being of participants before marriage.

Daurawa revealed that over 5,000 individuals applied for the programme. However, only 3,000 beneficiaries will be selected after the completion of the screening exercise and verification process.

The medical screening exercise commenced across 24 local government areas in Kano State, with officials working to finalize the list of successful applicants.

The Commander-General also praised Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf for supporting the initiative, describing it as a programme that will help strengthen families, promote social stability, and support vulnerable residents.

The Kano State mass wedding programme is expected to be one of the largest government-sponsored marriage initiatives in Nigeria, with thousands of beneficiaries set to receive support once the official date is announced by the state government.

Residents are now awaiting further details on the ceremony, which authorities say will take place after the screening and selection process is completed.
