The decision was reached during a full-house meeting of the organisation’s Directorate of State (DOS), according to a statement issued by the Head of the Directorate, Mazi Chikadibia Edoziem.
The leadership said it reviewed intelligence reports concerning communications allegedly originating from Kanu while he remains in detention.
According to the statement, the Directorate of State will now oversee the administration and affairs of IPOB. The group maintained that IPOB was collectively founded and developed by Biafrans in the diaspora and not by a single individual.
Explaining the decision, IPOB alleged that some communications linked to Kanu had contributed to the arrest and deaths of members in the South-East.
The organisation also expressed concerns that Kanu’s visitors and activities were under surveillance, warning that information obtained through such monitoring could be used against the movement.
The group further claimed that certain individuals were attempting to establish a new militia structure capable of escalating violence in the region.
As a result, IPOB said the suspension was necessary to prevent actions and statements that could expose members to arrest, torture, or death.
The latest development comes amid an intensifying leadership dispute within the organisation. Reports recently emerged that Nnamdi Kanu had dissolved the third administration of the Directorate of State and inaugurated a fourth administration.
The newly announced leadership structure reportedly named United States-based Mazi Chris Nwaọgụ as the new head of the Directorate of State.
IPOB spokesperson Emma Powerful stated that Nwaọgụ had been directed to immediately assume responsibility for the administration and coordination of the movement under Kanu’s authority.
