In a statement released on Monday, the university said the purported “Honorary Certificate” allegedly issued to Oderohiwo Joseph Efe, popularly known as Carter Efe, did not originate from the institution.
According to the university, it does not award honorary certificates for undergraduate academic performance and has never used the academic classification “First Class Upper.”
Babcock explained that its highest undergraduate classification is First Class Honours, making the circulating document inconsistent with its academic standards.
The institution urged members of the public, employers and educational institutions to disregard the alleged certificate and verify academic credentials directly through the Office of the Registrar before accepting any document presented in its name.
The university also reiterated its commitment to protecting the integrity of its academic records, warning that anyone found forging its certificates or unlawfully using the institution’s name would face appropriate legal and criminal action.
The statement comes after the alleged certificate gained widespread attention on social media, triggering debates and raising questions about its authenticity.
As of the time of filing this report, Carter Efe has not publicly responded to the university’s statement regarding the alleged certificate.
