The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has officially reshaped the landscape of Nigeria's upcoming political cycle by naming the former Minister of Transportation and ex-Rivers State Governor, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, as its vice-presidential candidate for the 2027 presidential election.

This high-profile selection sets up a powerhouse opposition ticket, pairing Amaechi alongside former Vice President Atiku Abubakar under the ADC banner.

The political bombshell was made public on Monday, June 15, 2026, through a formal statement released on the party's official X (formerly Twitter) platform by the ADC National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi.

According to the party leadership, Amaechi’s selection was the result of extensive, high-level consultations with key political stakeholders across all six geopolitical zones following the conclusion of the party’s presidential primary election, where Amaechi finished as the first runner-up.

“The National Leadership of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) is proud to announce that the Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi has been selected as the Vice-Presidential Candidate of our great party for the 2027 Presidential Election,” the party's official declaration read.

By pairing the two heavyweight politicians, the ADC believes it has created a highly competitive alternative capable of challenging the ruling party.

The party leadership explicitly framed the Atiku-Amaechi ticket as a strategic merger of "two tested statesmen" who possess the administrative experience, executive competence, and broad national appeal necessary to pull Nigeria out of its lingering socioeconomic and security challenges.

Profile Summary: Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi

The ADC statement heavily emphasized Amaechi's extensive political resume, noting that very few active contemporary politicians possess his balanced pedigree across both the legislative and executive arms of Nigerian governance.

Legislative Leadership: Served as the Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly (1999–2007).

Executive State Governance: Served two terms as the Executive Governor of oil-rich Rivers State (2007–2015).

Federal Cabinet Experience: Served as Nigeria's Minister of Transportation (2015–2022), spearheading major national rail infrastructure projects.

The opposition party is banking heavily on Amaechi’s formidable grassroots influence within the South-South geopolitical zone and his deep alignment with various political blocks across Southern Nigeria to establish a balanced regional equilibrium.

The ADC expressed absolute confidence that this alliance will significantly boost its coalition-building efforts ahead of the 2027 general elections, offering the Nigerian electorate a platform strictly centered on aggressive economic recovery, national security overhauls, massive job creation, and genuine national unity.
