The tragic UNIBEN student killing reportedly occurred on Sunday evening around the Ugbowo axis of Benin City. According to the police, the victims were inside a Mercedes-Benz GLK vehicle when another white GLK intercepted them and opened fire before fleeing the scene.
In a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Eno Ikoedem, the Command disclosed that the incident happened at about 5 p.m. while the occupants were driving out of the University of Benin main campus gate.
Preliminary investigations identified the occupants of the vehicle as Onwuke Blessed, Alexander Omogiate, and Chinenye Christian Mbagwu. Police also confirmed that a female passerby, identified as Dorathy Ubah, sustained gunshot injuries during the attack.
The statement revealed that police operatives responded immediately after receiving reports of the shooting and rushed the victims to the University of Benin Teaching Hospital for urgent medical attention.

Sadly, Alexander Omogiate was confirmed dead by doctors, while the other injured victims are reportedly responding to treatment. The Edo State Police Command stated that the Commissioner of Police, CP Monday Agbonika, has directed a full-scale investigation into the UNIBEN student killing with the aim of identifying and arresting those responsible.
The Command also warned criminal elements operating within Edo State, especially around university campuses, to desist from violence and unlawful activities, stressing that security agencies remain committed to tackling crime across the state.
Meanwhile, Governor Monday Okpebholo has condemned the killing and assured residents that justice will be served. The incident has continued to spark reactions among students and residents, with many expressing concern over rising insecurity around the university environment.
Police authorities have appealed to members of the public to provide useful information that could assist ongoing investigations into the fatal shooting, assuring that all information received would be treated confidentially.
