According to a heartbreaking family statement released on Wednesday, her death occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, April 14, 2026, leaving behind three newborns and a grieving family. The sequence of events began at the Niger Delta University Teaching Hospital (NDUTH) in Okolobiri, where Dr Ere Ogbachi successfully delivered her triplets.
However, the joy of the birth was short-lived as medical complications set in shortly after the procedure. Her brother, Meshack Sintei, shared the harrowing details in a Facebook post, explaining that her condition necessitated an emergency transfer to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Yenagoa.
Despite the frantic efforts of specialists to stabilize her, she struggled for breath as her oxygen saturation levels (SpO2) plummeted.
The family described a "painful experience" watching the medical team attempt to revive her as the ICU monitors began reading downwards from 70 to zero. At exactly 2:45 am on April 14, the battle for her life ended.
“We watched her struggling to live, we watched her gasping for breath... A generation has been lost, and the Sintei family mourns,” the statement read.
Before her untimely passing, Dr Ere Ogbachi was a well-respected figure in the healthcare sector. She served as a Registrar at NDUTH and was an active member of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA). An alumna of Niger Delta University, she was known by colleagues and friends as a dedicated fighter and a compassionate professional.
The news has sparked a wave of tributes across social media, with many calling for better support systems for maternal health, even for those within the medical profession. As of now, official statements from the hospital authorities are still being awaited.
