Mansoureh Khojasteh Bagherzadeh, the wife of Iran's late Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, has died days after sustaining injuries in a joint US-Israel airstrike on Tehran. The 79-year-old was reportedly at Khamenei’s compound during the attack, which occurred as tensions in the region escalated following the death of the Supreme Leader.
Mansoureh Khojasteh Bagherzadeh, the wife of Iran’s late Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, passed away on Monday after succumbing to injuries sustained in a US-Israel joint airstrike on Tehran. According to Iranian state media, Bagherzadeh, 79, was present at Khamenei's compound during the attack and was reportedly injured before she later died from her wounds.
Born in Mashhad, Iran, Bagherzadeh was the sister of Hassan Khojaste Bagherzadeh, a former deputy director of the state-run Iranian Broadcasting (IRIB). She married Ali Khamenei in 1964, and together they had six children: four sons—Mostafa, Mojtaba, Masoud, and Meysam—and two daughters, Hoda and Boshra.
The US-Israel strike, which targeted the Iranian leadership, also reportedly claimed the lives of Khamenei’s daughter, son-in-law, and grandchild. Khamenei’s death, confirmed by Iranian authorities, has sparked significant regional tension, with Iran retaliating by targeting US military bases across the Middle East.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian condemned the assassination, calling it a "declaration of war" and vowing to forcefully crush enemy bases. He reaffirmed Iran's commitment to avenging the loss, stating, “The Islamic Republic of Iran considers it its legitimate duty and right to avenge the perpetrators and masterminds of this historic crime.”
Following the incident, Iran claimed responsibility for multiple missile strikes on US military installations, including the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier, though this was denied by the US Central Command. In addition, Iran alleged that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office had been targeted, but Israeli authorities dismissed the claim as false.
The Iranian Red Crescent Society reported at least 555 fatalities, with over 130 cities affected by the ongoing conflict. In response, the US and Israel have continued their strikes on Iranian military facilities, claiming significant damage to Tehran’s military infrastructure.
