The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Amupitan, has assured Nigerians that the commission is fully prepared for the 2027 elections, particularly in the electronic transmission of results. However, he cautioned that the commission could not guarantee a "100 percent perfect election," urging the public to manage their expectations.

In a live broadcast of the Citizens' Town Hall programme on Sunday, Prof. Joash Amupitan emphasized that INEC had the capability to electronically transmit election results for the 2027 general elections. However, he acknowledged that challenges surrounding real-time transmission in certain regions could complicate the process. The event, moderated by Seun Okinbaloye and Samson Itodo, featured discussions on the Electoral Act 2026, with prominent figures such as APC National Chairman, Nentawe Yilwatda, and Labour Party’s Interim Chairman, Nenadi Usman, also in attendance.

Amupitan reassured the public that while INEC is committed to ensuring a fair election, achieving 100 percent perfection may not be feasible at this stage. He mentioned that recent experiences, like those during the Federal Capital Territory Area Council elections, highlighted the difficulties faced in remote areas. “We have the capacity to transmit the results,” said Amupitan, but noted that “real-time transmission” in certain areas, particularly those with difficult terrain, remains a challenge.

The INEC chairman also reflected on the electoral reforms, especially the push for mandatory electronic transmission of results. He revealed that although there was initial resistance, the commission succeeded in ensuring this provision became a part of the Electoral Act 2026. He further emphasized that logistical issues—such as delays in transmitting results—were often the result of infrastructure limitations rather than technical failures.

Despite these challenges, Amupitan expressed optimism for the 2027 elections, citing growing public demand for accountability and increased voter awareness. “Nigerians of 2027 are different from those of 2023. The country will move forward once people begin to trust INEC and their leaders,” he concluded.
