Former Anambra State Governor and former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has officially declared his intention to run in the Peter Obi 2027 presidential election, stating that he remains determined despite political pressure and attempts to discourage him.
Obi made the declaration on Friday while addressing his supporters in Njikoka, Anambra State, where he spoke about the current state of the country and his vision for national transformation.
According to him, Nigeria is currently facing serious challenges that require urgent leadership and reforms.
Speaking during the gathering, Obi lamented the current economic and political situation in the country, describing Nigeria as a nation that has “collapsed” and requires urgent rebuilding.
He said his interest in the Peter Obi 2027 presidential election is not driven by personal ambition but by the desire to see Nigeria function properly.
“Nigeria has collapsed and already lying on the ground. Nigeria is not working because many rich Nigerians are hungry and greedy,” Obi said.
He also criticized the growing inequality in the country, saying the system is heavily tilted against the poor.
According to him, Nigeria must become a place where individuals can succeed through hard work rather than political connections.
During the event, Obi also addressed questions surrounding his political affiliation, explaining why he left the Labour Party.
He said the party had been battling internal leadership disputes in court and had secured favourable rulings, but the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) allegedly failed to recognise the decisions.
Obi stated that the situation forced him to move to another political platform.
“People have been asking me why I left LP. We had been in court over leadership issues and were winning the cases, yet INEC refused to recognise us,” he said.
Despite political opposition, Obi insisted he will participate in the Peter Obi 2027 presidential election, regardless of how many governors support the ruling party.
He challenged the authorities to ensure the election is free and fair.
“With their 30 governors, they should make the election free and fair and see who wins,” he said.
“No matter what they do, I must contest the election. Bring the ball to the middle of the field and let the contest begin.”
Obi added that his ultimate goal is to create a Nigeria where every citizen has equal opportunity to succeed.
