Osimhen recounted how he left home with nothing but a backpack and two pairs of clothes—one he wore and a green kit packed away—traveling overnight to Abuja in what he described as “the oldest car you can imagine.”
Arriving at midnight, the future Napoli and Nigeria star woke up to a staggering scene the next morning: hundreds of hopeful young footballers gathered outside the stadium, all chasing the same dream.
“Maybe one million is an exaggeration,” he said, “but not by much. There must have been 900 kids waiting.”
Despite the massive turnout, Osimhen did not even step onto the pitch on the first day. It wasn’t until the second day that opportunity finally came—when a coach pointed at him and gave a brief instruction:
“Green shirt. Let’s go. You have 15 minutes.”
Those 15 minutes, Osimhen said, were everything.
“I knew the only way to impress them was to run,” he recalled. “So I ran until I was sweating blood.”
The effort paid off as he scored two goals in just 15 minutes, giving himself hope that his dream might survive. But moments later, that hope appeared to vanish.
When the coaches addressed the crowd and began calling out selected names, Osimhen did not hear his.
“My dream was dead,” he said.
As he prepared to leave the stadium, voices suddenly rang out behind him.
“Hey! Hey! The guy in green!”
At first unsure, Osimhen turned around as other players pointed toward him. The team doctor had identified him as the player who scored twice, holding up two fingers as confirmation.
“That’s the kid,” the doctor reportedly told the coach.
Those two fingers, Osimhen believes, saved his life.
“If the team doctor didn’t do that, I would not be a footballer today,” he said. “I would probably be at the bottom of a well.”
The story has since resonated deeply with fans across social media, with many praising Osimhen’s resilience, humility, and honesty about the harsh realities young African footballers face.
Today, Osimhen stands as one of Africa’s most successful strikers—proof that a single moment, when met with courage and relentless effort, can change everything.
