“That was the day I swore that I must fight this guy to the finish,” Sowore said, recalling the incident that marked the turning point in his relationship with the former police boss.
Sowore further revealed that he had repeatedly warned President Bola Tinubu against extending Egbetokun’s tenure, insisting that such a move would worsen public distrust in the Nigeria Police Force.
According to Sowore, his concerns predated the controversial extension of Egbetokun’s tenure. He claimed the former IG’s leadership style undermined democratic freedoms and intensified police crackdowns on dissenting voices across the country.
“This guy is the worst police IG in recent times,” Sowore stated, arguing that Egbetokun’s actions eroded public confidence and violated fundamental rights.
Egbetokun’s removal has sparked renewed debate among Nigerians, with civil society groups, political commentators, and social media users weighing in on the legacy of his tenure. While some defend his leadership as firm on law and order, critics echo Sowore’s view that his approach was heavy-handed and intolerant of dissent.
