Only 17 Traders Turn Up as Onitsha Main Market Defies Soludo’s Reopening Order

Only 17 traders reportedly opened their shops at the Onitsha Main Market on Monday, despite a directive by Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, ordering a resumption of commercial activities.

The development was confirmed in a report submitted by a man appointed by the state government to monitor traders’ attendance at the market.

The extremely low turnout highlights growing resistance among traders, who have openly rejected the state government’s instruction to reopen businesses on Mondays.

Traders at the bustling commercial centre insist that the long-standing sit-at-home order remains in effect, distancing themselves from the governor’s position.

According to several traders, the weekly shutdown will continue until the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

They maintained that no level of warning, enforcement, or monitoring by the government would compel them to resume activities under the current circumstances.

As of the time of filing this report, the market remained largely deserted, with most shops firmly locked and commercial activities at a standstill.

Although security personnel were visibly present around the market area, tension remained high as traders stood their ground.

The situation has raised concerns over a prolonged economic shutdown at one of the South-East’s largest commercial hubs, with implications for traders, transporters, and the wider Anambra economy if the standoff persists.
