You Need a Coach Before a Mentor — Not the Other Way Around

Many people get this completely wrong.

You don’t need a mentor before you make money.

You need a mentor after you’ve made some money.

Before then, what you actually need is a coach.

Read to the end.

I Am Not a Coach — I Am a Mentor

Let me make this clear.

I am not a coach. I am a mentor. And there is a big difference.

A coach is a paid guide who focuses on skill-building, accountability, and short-term results. A coach teaches you how to do things — sales, time management, business structure, mindset, execution.

Think of a coach like a gym trainer.

They push you through workouts.

They correct your form.

They help you build muscles you don’t yet have.

There are many coaches on social media today, and they deserve to be paid for their work.

Why I Don’t Charge for Coaching

I don’t charge for coaching because I am not a coach.

I am a mentor, and that comes from a lifelong journey — starting from my early days as a pastor in my youth, through years of experience, failure, growth, and leadership.

Mentorship is not transactional.

It is earned, not bought.

So, Who Is a Mentor?

A mentor is an experienced individual who offers long-term wisdom, insights from their own journey, and access to bigger opportunities and networks.

Mentoring is often unpaid and voluntary.

It is driven by relationship, respect, and belief in someone’s potential.

A mentor:

. Shares experience, not step-by-step tutorials

. Opens doors, not lesson notes

. Helps with big-picture decisions, not daily survival

A mentor assumes you already have food to eat.

A mentor assumes you can handle your day-to-day life.

A Mentor Sees the Future Version of You

A mentor can look at you while you’re still building and see a president of a country, not just a struggling entrepreneur.

Then, over time, they mold you into that version.

That process is long-term, and you can’t afford to pay for it — not because it’s cheap, but because it’s priceless.

The only currency a mentor requires is mutual respect.

Coaching Is Transactional — Mentoring Is Relational

This is the key difference most people miss.

. Coaching is transactional and directive

(You pay for skills and results)

. Mentoring is relational and inspirational

(It’s earned through respect, proof, and character)

When you’re just starting out — in business, a side hustle, or a career shift — you often lack:

. Skills

. Confidence

. Structure

. Track record

. Clear direction

At this stage, you are not ready for a mentor.

You need someone you can pay to help you build competence.

Why Coaches Are Easier to Access Than Mentors

It’s simple.

Coaches sell time and expertise.

Mentors invest reputation, relationships, and legacy.

That’s why it’s easier to find a coach than a mentor.

Once you start making money consistently, building a real business, and saving responsibly, you create proof of seriousness.

That proof attracts mentors.

Proof Is What Attracts Mentors

High-caliber mentors have limited time.

They don’t invest in ideas.

They invest in people who have shown results.

Tony Elumelu will never mentor someone who hasn’t proven discipline, execution, and growth in other areas of life.

A mentor will not help you make your first million.

A mentor will help you consolidate your next hundred million.

Mentorship Requires Reciprocity

Mentoring works when both sides bring value.

You bring:

. Results

. Character

. Vision

. Execution

The mentor brings:

. Experience

. Access

. Perspective

Without prior success, the relationship becomes one-sided — and that’s why it fails.

As Robbins once said:

“Bootstrap with coaching, then level up with mentoring.”

A Cultural Mistake We Must Fix

In Nigeria, many people make small money and immediately believe they don’t need mentorship.

In other parts of the world, that’s exactly when people seek mentors — to multiply impact.

Bill Gates.

Elon Musk.

Many global leaders.

They all had coaches first.

Mentors came after success.

If I had a mentor when I made my first money in Okigwe, I would be far greater today.

Final Thoughts

If you are still building: 👉 Get a coach.

If you have proven yourself: 👉 Earn a mentor.

Mixing the two is why many people stay stuck.
