AFCON 2025: Nigeria Crash Out on Penalties
Nigeria’s Super Eagles have been eliminated from the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) after suffering a painful 4–2 penalty shootout defeat to host nation Morocco in a tense semi-final clash played in Rabat.
The encounter ended 0–0 after 120 minutes, with both sides failing to find a breakthrough despite creating several clear chances.
Morocco goalkeeper Yassine Bounou emerged as the hero during the shootout, saving two Nigerian penalties before Youssef En-Nesyri calmly converted the decisive kick to send the Atlas Lions into the AFCON final.
Nigeria Struggle With Finishing Again
Nigeria delivered a disciplined defensive performance but once again struggled in front of goal — a recurring problem that ultimately cost them a place in the final.
The Super Eagles will now turn their attention to the third-place playoff against Egypt, as they aim to end the tournament on a positive note.
Senegal Defeat Egypt to Reach AFCON Final
Meanwhile, Senegal booked their place in the AFCON 2025 final after edging Egypt 1–0 in the other semi-final encounter.
A second-half strike from Sadio Mané proved decisive as the reigning champions outclassed Egypt in a tightly contested match.
Despite the presence of star forward Mohamed Salah, Egypt were unable to break down Senegal’s solid defence and were punished late in the game. The Teranga Lions showed composure and control to see out the victory.
