Cosmas Ugwu, a policeman from the Imo State Police Command, met a tragic end as he was fatally shot by his 23-year-old girlfriend, identified as Amanda Uchechi Ugo. The distressing incident occurred at the Ezinihitte Area Command around 6:30 pm on Boxing Day, resulting in Ugwu's demise.
Reportedly, three gunshots were heard from Ugwu's room, drawing the attention of officers on duty. Upon entering, they found Ugwu in critical condition, having been shot thrice in the chest and left hand. Rushed to Evergreen Hospital, he was pronounced dead by attending medical personnel.
Sources revealed that a heated argument between Ugwu and his girlfriend led to a physical altercation, during which the girlfriend accessed Ugwu's rifle and used it to inflict fatal injuries. The circumstances surrounding the girlfriend's proficiency with a police rifle remain unclear.
The deceased officer's body was taken to the Obizi mortuary, while the suspect is in police custody for interrogation and possible prosecution. Imo State Police Public Relations Officer, Henry Okoye, confirmed the incident, highlighting ongoing efforts to investigate and establish the details of the tragedy.
