The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) have strongly criticized the alleged arrest of the Labour president, Comrade Joe Ajaero. This alleged arrest occurred during a protest by NLC members in Imo state, and it has sparked a significant outcry.

According to a joint statement signed by the General Secretary of NLC, Comrade Emmanuel Ugboaja Esq., and the Secretary General of TUC, Comrade Nuhu Toro, Comrade Joe Ajaero was forcibly taken into custody by security operatives during the protest.

The unions have expressed their concern and urged their members to be on alert for a potential nationwide action if the President of the Congress is not released by the end of the day.

The statement revealed that the Imo state government has been employing violence and intimidation against trade unions and their leadership. During the morning of the protest, the situation escalated with police attempting to disperse workers, followed by the involvement of thugs who inflicted injuries and damages.

The President of NLC, Comrade Joe Ajaero, arrived at the scene but was met with police officers and thugs, who further assaulted him. He was subsequently taken away to an undisclosed location.

The unions are demanding the immediate release of Comrade Joe Ajaero and medical treatment for his injuries. They are also urging the government to respect the rights of workers and uphold agreements made with the unions.
