1. DNA means Deoxyribonucleic acid. It is the molecule that carries genetic information for the development and functioning of your body.

2. You share 99.9% of their DNA with every other human, 98.7% with chimpanzees and bonobos, 85% with a mouse, 40% with a fruitfly, and 41% with a banana.

3. But even identical (monozygotic) twins tend not to have 100% identical DNA. This means no one else in the world has the same DNA sequence as you and because your DNA is unique, your physical appearance (phenotype) is also unique.

4. If you put all the DNA molecules in your body end to end, the DNA would reach from the Earth to the Sun and back over 600 times (100 trillion times six feet divided by 92 million miles).

5. If you could type 60 words per minute, 8 hours a day, it would take you 50 years to type your human genome.

6. Even though DNA codes for all the information that makes up your body, it is built using only four building blocks (nucleotides); adenine, guanine, thymine, and cytosine.

7. Friedrich Miescher discovered DNA in 1869, but scientists did not understand DNA was the genetic material in cells until 1943.
