Amid controversy surrounding the re-election of President Ali Bongo for a third term in Gabon, army officers have taken control of the nation, declaring the annulment of the election results on national television. This development comes after opposition groups alleged electoral fraud.

A group of twelve soldiers appeared on Gabonese television to announce their assumption of power and the cancellation of the election results. They emphasized the dissolution of all national institutions, citing concerns over the nation's deteriorating social cohesion due to what they termed as irresponsible governance.

President Ali Bongo was declared the winner of the election by the Gabonese Election Centre (CGE) with 64.27% of the votes, while his main rival, Albert Ossa, secured 30.77%. Ossa had raised allegations of electoral fraud and irregularities, which were denied by Bongo's team.

Tensions had been escalating in Gabon in the aftermath of the presidential and parliamentary elections. The seizure of power by the military raises concerns about potential unrest and instability in the nation.

Ali Bongo's presidency followed a family legacy, as he succeeded his father, Omar Bongo, who had held power for 53 years. Omar Bongo's passing in 2009 led to Ali Bongo's ascension to the presidency.

President Bongo faced health challenges in 2018 due to a stroke, resulting in a year-long absence from his duties. Calls for his resignation were made during his recovery. In 2019, there was a coup attempt against him, leading to the imprisonment of the soldiers involved.

The military's intervention and the annulment of election results have thrown Gabon into a state of uncertainty. The nation's political landscape remains fluid as reactions to the military takeover unfold both domestically and internationally.
