According to Russia's communications and media regulator, Instagram is being blocked in the country because it is propagating "calls to conduct violent acts against Russian citizens, particularly military members."
The Russian regulator, Roskomnadzor, took the action on Friday as Russia continued its assault of Ukraine.
The limits are set to take effect on March 14th, according to the statement. In a statement posted by its spokesperson Andy Stone earlier on Friday, Meta, the company that owns Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, claimed it had "made exemptions for kinds of political expression that would ordinarily violate our rules on violent speech, such as 'death to the Russian invaders.
The corporation "still won't allow credible appeals for violence against Russian residents," according to the statement.
Meanwhile, when Facebook's parent company, Meta Platforms, revised its hate speech policies, Russia filed a criminal complaint against it and tried to classify it as a "extremist group" on Friday.
Prosecutors have urged a Russian court to halt the company's operations in the country, according to Interfax.
