The police paraded 14 suspects involved in the October 29 raid on Justice Mary Odili's Maitama residence on Thursday, revealing more details about the incident.
The police discovered that the group that stormed the apartment was not a security team. The men were said to be led by Lawrence Ajojo, a phoney Chief Superintendent of Police who admitted to being hired as a consultant by Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, SAN.
Frank Mba, a spokesman for the Force Criminal Investigation Department in Garki, Abuja, said the suspects involved in the criminal acts came from various professional backgrounds.
Ajojo told journalists that he was not a police officer and that he worked for the AGF as a consultant. "I am not a Nigerian police officer; I am a consultant for the AGF; he did not send us to Mrs Odili's house," he explained. On the basis of a purported tip from a whistleblower, Aliyu Umar, who claimed to have observed suspicious activities at the Supreme Court Justice's residence, a contingent of security operatives stormed Odili's Maitama residence.
On October 29, 2021, security operatives besieged Odili's home after Chief Magistrate Emmanuel Iyanna approved a search warrant by a body known as the Joint Panel Recovery unit in the Ministry of Justice, but they were reportedly resisted. The order was later revoked by the magistrate, who claimed he had been misled.
The incident sparked outrage, with the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, SAN, clearing his office of involvement. The raid was also unknown to the police leadership, who stated that they were unaware of it.
