Court adjourns suit on Biafra referendum

The suit filed by the Coalition of Northern Groups seeking a referendum to determine the fate of Biafra and other separatist organizations in Nigeria has been adjourned until January 20, 2022 by a Federal High Court in Abuja.

Because Justice Inyang Ekwo was unable to sit due to official obligations, the case was adjourned.

The CNG had taken the National Assembly and the Attorney-General of the Federation to court in June, requesting that the court order the defendants to stop the ongoing constitutional review process and hold a referendum to determine what determines Nigeria and who populates it.

After the adjournment, CNG's spokesperson, Abdul-Azeez Suleiman, told journalists that the court could not sit and that the case would be adjourned.

"What we're doing is to save the country, ourselves, and the country's future," Suleiman explained, "because these people are already becoming violent." The majority of those involved in this activity are under the age of 50.

“So, if our leaders leave us in this situation with these people, there may be more bloodshed or civil war. We want to avoid that, which is why we came to the court to have the situation interpreted.

"Before any further steps are taken to review the Constitution, one of the issues for determination in the substantive suit is the legal obligation of the 2nd – 4th defendants/respondents to provide a framework that will pave the way for the self-determination of the South-Eastern states and any other enclave that wants to go so as to leave the geographical entity called Nigeria."
