The wife of the Governor of Abia State, Mrs. Nkechi Ikpeazu, has visited the student of Abia State Polytechnic, Aba, whose alleged rape by policemen attached to the Rapid Response Squad in Aba.
The incident sparked heavy protests by students of the institution on Thursday 23 September 2021, causing road blocks and chaos along the Aba-Owerri road axis, read here
She assured them that her foundation, Vicar Hope, would cover her medical expenses and ensure that justice was served in the case.
Mrs Ikpeazu, who had previously called and spoken with the victim, was accompanied by Dr Suzzy Nwachukwu, a medical personnel attached to the Governor's Wife's Office, to the medical facility where the victim was receiving treatment in Aba.
She condemned the heinous crime's perpetrators' actions and vowed that the matter would not be swept under the rug.
Mrs. Ikpeazu also ordered that the lady be transferred to a different medical facility within the state for better care, and warned anyone who is still threatening her to expect the full force of the law.
Meanwhile, the state government has asked the commissioner of police, Mrs. Janet Agbede, to investigate allegations of security agents harassing students and other citizens in the state as soon as possible.
John Okiyi Kalu, the Commissioner for Information, told journalists that Governor Okezie Ikpeazu has directed police authorities to conduct thorough investigations and prosecutions of officers who harass law-abiding citizens in order to serve as a deterrent to others.
