Ikpeazu was appointed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as Nigeria’s Ambassador to the Kingdom of Spain. His formal accreditation was completed on Monday, September 14, 2026, during a diplomatic ceremony at the Royal Palace.
The Spanish Royal Household confirmed that King Felipe VI received the Letters of Credence from Ikpeazu alongside those of new ambassadors representing Ghana, Chile, Venezuela, Thailand and Palestine.
The presentation of Letters of Credence formally establishes a foreign ambassador as the representative and senior diplomatic authority of their country in Spain. Spain’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs explained that the ceremony must be completed before a newly appointed ambassador can fully exercise diplomatic functions.
The ceremony followed the established Spanish diplomatic protocol, which includes the arrival of new ambassadors at the historic Palace of Santa Cruz, headquarters of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation.
From there, ambassadors traditionally proceed to the Royal Palace accompanied by members of the Royal Horse Guard before presenting their credentials to the King. The ceremony dates back to the 18th century and has retained much of its traditional format.
During the ceremony, Ikpeazu presented his diplomatic credentials to King Felipe VI and later held a private meeting with the Spanish monarch. Spain’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation is also traditionally present during the presentation of Letters of Credence.
With the completion of the accreditation process, Ikpeazu now officially begins his responsibilities as Nigeria’s principal diplomatic representative in Spain.
His role is expected to include strengthening Nigeria-Spain relations, promoting trade and investment, advancing bilateral cooperation and representing Nigeria’s interests in Spain.
The appointment places the former Abia governor at the centre of Nigeria’s diplomatic engagement with Spain as both countries seek to deepen political and economic cooperation.
