Brighton stunned Premier League champions Arsenal with a 3-0 victory at the Amex Stadium on Saturday, September 19, 2026, ending the Gunners’ perfect start to their league title defence.
Arsenal had won their opening four Premier League matches of the campaign and seven games in all competitions before travelling to the south coast, but Brighton produced a dominant display to hand Mikel Arteta’s side their first defeat of the season.
Brighton took the lead in the 31st minute through Pascal Gross. The midfielder was given space near the edge of the penalty area before curling a right-footed effort beyond David Raya and into the net via the post.
Arsenal struggled to respond and came close to equalising before half-time when Bukayo Saka found himself in a good position following a quick attack, but his effort lacked the power to seriously trouble Brighton goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen.
The hosts then doubled their advantage on the stroke of half-time. Charalampos Kostoulas controlled the ball on the edge of the area before turning and firing a low shot beyond Raya to make it 2-0.
Brighton continued to control the game after the interval and added a third goal in the 57th minute. Gross delivered a corner into the area and Chema Andrés rose unchallenged to head the ball into the net for his first Brighton league goal.
Arsenal were unable to find a response despite late opportunities. Kai Havertz was denied by Verbruggen after getting through on goal, while Brighton continued to threaten at the other end as they searched for a fourth.
The result marked Arsenal’s first Premier League defeat of the season and their first loss by three goals since May 2023. Brighton, meanwhile, moved up to third place with 10 points after five league matches.
Arsenal remained on 12 points after five matches, level with Manchester City, although City had a game in hand. The defeat also ended the champions’ run of four straight league victories at the beginning of their title defence.
For Brighton, the victory provided a major boost as the club celebrated its 125th anniversary. Gross, Kostoulas and Andrés delivered the goals as Fabian Hürzeler’s side produced one of their most impressive performances of the campaign.
