Atiku Abubakar ADC Candidate: Party Defends Choice for 2027 Presidential Ticket

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has defended its choice of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar as the Atiku Abubakar ADC candidate for the 2027 presidential election, describing Nigeria as a traumatized nation in urgent need of seasoned political leadership. 

Bolaji Abdullahi, the party's National Publicity Secretary, articulated the party's stance during an interview on News Central while addressing questions regarding the joint ticket featuring Atiku alongside former Rivers State Governor and ex-Transportation Minister Rotimi Amaechi. 

Responding to critiques over both candidates having previously held prominent public offices, Abdullahi argued that past governance experience should not be a disqualifier, asserting that deep political familiarity is a crucial asset given the country's prevailing security and economic headwinds. 

To contextualize the decision, Abdullahi compared Nigeria's current situation to post-apartheid South Africa, where the African National Congress (ANC) turned to Nelson Mandela as a stabilizing father figure despite having younger leaders in its ranks. 

The party maintains that the Atiku Abubakar ADC candidate ticket offers the requisite maturity and historical understanding to navigate national trauma brought on by escalating terrorism, widespread banditry, and severe economic hardship that has left millions poorer. 

By pairing Atiku's administrative background with Amaechi's executive drive, the ADC aims to present a balanced, nationally representative alternative to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2027 general election.
