In a statement titled “Hunger and the Insensitivity of Mr. President,” Obi reacted to remarks made by President Tinubu during a meeting with Catholic bishops, where the President reportedly stated that hunger had always existed in Nigeria, even before he was born.
According to Obi, while hunger has indeed been a longstanding issue in the country, such remarks appear insensitive to the worsening economic hardship currently affecting millions of Nigerians.
The former Anambra State governor argued that the focus should instead be on measurable outcomes achieved through governance.
Citing available estimates, Obi stated that before the current administration assumed office in 2023, about 17 million Nigerians were facing acute food insecurity due to insecurity, armed conflict, banditry and flooding.
He claimed that the figure has now risen to approximately 35 million, suggesting that the food crisis has worsened in less than three years.
Obi also expressed concern over rising poverty levels, stating that Nigeria’s population living in extreme poverty has increased significantly since the current administration came into office.
While acknowledging that President Tinubu inherited serious economic and security challenges, Obi maintained that governments should ultimately be judged by the effectiveness of their policies and the results they deliver.
He argued that persistent insecurity, poor economic management, fiscal indiscipline, wasteful public spending and inadequate investment in productive sectors have contributed to the country’s current economic difficulties.
According to Obi, addressing Nigeria’s challenges requires greater investment in education, healthcare, agriculture, security, and small businesses, alongside policies that encourage production, create employment and reduce poverty.
He concluded his statement by reaffirming his commitment to what he described as a vision for a better Nigeria, ending with his familiar message:
“A New Nigeria is Possible.”
