Unidentified Barrow Pusher Found Dead in Aba as Authorities Seek Help to Identify Him

An unidentified barrow pusher found dead in Aba has prompted authorities to appeal to the public for help in identifying the deceased and locating his relatives.

The man, believed to be a barrow pusher, was discovered lifeless at Atuma House, opposite St. Paul’s, No. 104 Aba-Owerri Road in Aba, Abia State.

According to residents, the deceased had reportedly finished his day’s work and was seen resting inside his barrow. He remained in the same position throughout the night, raising concerns among people in the area the following morning.

A police document dated July 23, 2026, confirmed that officers responded after receiving a report of an unidentified corpse at the location.

Authorities estimated the deceased to be in his 50s. By the time officials arrived, the body had reportedly begun to decompose, creating public health concerns.

Following the report, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of the Abayi Police Division directed the Environmental and Health Department of Osisioma Ngwa Local Government Area to evacuate the body from the scene.

The Environmental Health Department has since removed the remains and deposited them at the Abia State University Teaching Hospital (ABSUTH) in Ahiaba, Umueze, where they will be preserved while efforts continue to establish the man’s identity.

Authorities are urging anyone who recognises the deceased or has information that could help identify him or locate his family to contact the Head of Department, Environmental Health Services, Osisioma Ngwa Local Government Health Authority.

The exact cause and circumstances surrounding the man’s death have not yet been established. Officials have not indicated whether foul play is suspected, and investigations into the incident are ongoing.
