Crowds celebrate Mexico's FIFA World Cup victory near the Angel of Independence in Mexico City.

At least two people died during Mexico World Cup victory celebrations in Mexico City after the national team secured a place in the FIFA World Cup round of 16 with a 2-0 win over Ecuador.

According to Mexico City's health authorities, the victims were a 19-year-old woman and a 44-year-old man, who reportedly died from suffocation as thousands of football fans gathered to celebrate the national team's victory.

The incident occurred at the intersection of Hamburgo and Lancaster Streets, close to the Angel of Independence monument, one of the city's most popular gathering points for public celebrations.

Emergency responders rushed to the scene and attempted to revive the victims, but both were pronounced dead.

Authorities said they have not confirmed local media reports claiming a third person also died during the celebrations. Investigations into the incident are ongoing.

The celebrations followed Mexico's impressive 2-0 victory over Ecuador in the FIFA World Cup Round of 32, a result that secured the country's place in the round of 16.

The victory also marked Mexico's first FIFA World Cup knockout-stage win since 1986, prompting massive celebrations across the capital.

According to estimates by the Mexico City government, more than one million people gathered in different parts of the city, with the largest crowds assembling around the Angel of Independence monument.

Officials are expected to review crowd management and public safety measures following the tragic incident as preparations continue for Mexico's next World Cup fixture in the round of 16.
