Lady Cries Out Over Brother’s Drug Addiction, Seeks Help

A Nigerian woman has broken down in an emotional video appeal, asking the public for help after years of serving as the sole caregiver for her brother who she says has been battling substance dependency since he gained admission to the University of Lagos in 2019. 

The lady cries out over her brother’s drug addiction in a video that has quickly gone viral, driven by the raw honesty of her account and the recognition many Nigerians felt at hearing a story they have lived quietly in their own homes without ever speaking about it publicly.

She disclosed that in her years of effort to help him recover, she personally arranged treatment at approximately seven different psychiatric facilities and rehabilitation centres across Lagos — including hospitals in Yaba and a military hospital — none of which produced any lasting improvement. 

His condition instead became worse over time, with his behaviour growing violent, unpredictable, and increasingly dangerous. 

Driven by the need to protect her young daughter, she made the painful decision to move out of the family home entirely. That separation, however, was short-lived. 

Her brother and parents were reportedly evicted and subsequently moved into her own residence, erasing the safety boundary she had worked so hard to create.

“I’m tired of carrying responsibilities that I had no business carrying,” she said, her voice reflecting years of accumulated exhaustion. She described taking him to hospitals, to church, and to multiple treatment centres with no clear path forward remaining. 

“I don’t know again. I’m tired. Please, I’m drowning. 

I need help,” she said, in words that struck a nerve across social media platforms and drew an outpouring of responses from viewers who recognised both the weight of her burden and the inadequacy of the support systems available to Nigerian families navigating addiction.

Her story has drawn renewed attention to the gaps in Nigeria’s mental health and rehabilitation infrastructure, where families are frequently left to manage severe addiction cases with little structured guidance, financial support, or access to long-term treatment programmes.
