Five family members have been found dead inside their locked residence at Umuimo Village, Osisioma Ngwa Local Government Area of Abia State, in a discovery that has shaken the local community and triggered a formal police investigation.

The five family members found dead in Abia State have been identified as Mr. Kachi Nnabugwu, his wife Mrs. Chinaza Nnabugwu, and their three young children, whose decomposing bodies were uncovered by neighbours on Wednesday, July 22, 2026, after the family had not been seen outside since the previous Sunday.

Growing concern among neighbours eventually drove community members to take action.

After repeated knocks at the family’s door went unanswered and all attempts to reach them by phone failed, they forced open the locked entrance and were confronted with a scene of horror.

Investigators found containers of leftover food and a generator set inside the home — items now under close examination as police work to establish a cause of death.

The advanced decomposition of the bodies indicated the family had likely been dead for multiple days before anyone raised the alarm, adding urgency to the investigation into the five family members found dead in Abia State.

The Abia State Police Command moved swiftly following the discovery. On the same day, police officers from the Osisioma Divisional Police Headquarters visited the crime scene, conducted a preliminary visual inspection, and photographed the bodies before evacuating all five corpses to a mortuary for preservation and autopsy. DSP Maureen Chinaka, the Police Public Relations Officer for Abia State, confirmed that the alarm was raised by the deceased’s brother, who had grown alarmed after being unable to contact Mr. Nnabugwu and personally went to the residence with others before the forced entry was made.

Residents of Umuimo Village and the wider Osisioma Ngwa area have appealed to government authorities and security agencies to conduct a thorough and transparent investigation to uncover what claimed the lives of the young family.

The presence of the generator set inside the enclosed home has fuelled community speculation about possible carbon monoxide poisoning, though investigators have not yet confirmed any cause of death.

A full post-mortem examination is expected to provide clearer answers, with the Abia State Police Command pledging to leave no question unanswered in the tragic case of the five family members found dead in Abia State.
