The Benjamin Kalu ₦780 million church intervention has sparked political debate in Abia State, with the All Progressives Congress (APC) defending the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives against criticism from the Labour Party and the Abia State Government.

In a statement signed by the APC Abia State Publicity Secretary, Uche Aguoru, the party described the criticism against Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu as a politically motivated campaign aimed at undermining his record of attracting federal projects and interventions to his constituency.

According to the APC, the Federal Government made a budgetary provision of ₦8.05 billion in the 2026 budget for faith-based organisations, with ₦1.91 billion allocated to churches and ₦6.14 billion earmarked for mosques.

The party claimed that through his influence and legislative efforts, Kalu secured ₦780 million from the church allocation for churches in Bende Federal Constituency.

The APC argued that rather than celebrating what it described as an achievement, political opponents had chosen to spread misinformation. It also noted that the funds being discussed had not yet been released.

The statement challenged critics to provide factual evidence to support their claims instead of what it described as propaganda.

The party further questioned Governor Alex Otti’s donations to churches during public engagements, asking under which budgetary provisions those contributions were made and from which public funds they were financed.

According to the APC, it is contradictory to criticize Benjamin Kalu for facilitating a federally budgeted intervention while applauding similar financial support provided by other political leaders to religious organisations.

The party maintained that the attacks on the Deputy Speaker were driven by political rivalry rather than concerns about transparency or accountability.

It praised Kalu’s performance in office, describing him as one of Nigeria’s most productive lawmakers who has consistently attracted federal institutions, infrastructure projects and development initiatives to Abia State.

The APC also urged residents of Bende Federal Constituency to reject what it described as politics built on bitterness, falsehood and character assassination. It insisted that elected representatives should be judged by their performance and ability to deliver democratic dividends to their constituents.

The party concluded by expressing confidence that Benjamin Kalu continues to enjoy strong support in Bende Federal Constituency, stating that his record of attracting development projects remains a key measure of effective representation.
