Former presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has called for the resignation of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, arguing that the current administration has failed to deliver on key promises made to Nigerians.

In a statement shared on Friday, Obi referenced the recent resignation announcement by the British Prime Minister, saying it reflects a political culture of accountability that leaders in developing democracies should emulate.

According to Obi, the British leader’s decision followed growing public dissatisfaction over economic challenges, rising living costs, and unmet campaign promises.

He contrasted that situation with Nigeria’s current realities, claiming that insecurity, economic hardship, and inadequate electricity supply have worsened under the present administration.

The former governor recalled that before the 2015 elections, President Tinubu had repeatedly criticized former President Goodluck Jonathan over insecurity and economic difficulties.

Obi noted that Tinubu had also demanded Jonathan’s resignation during the Chibok schoolgirls kidnapping crisis, arguing at the time that government had failed in its responsibility to protect citizens.

Obi further stated that during the 2023 presidential campaign, Tinubu promised improved electricity supply, stronger anti-corruption efforts, and better living conditions for Nigerians.

He added that the President had challenged voters not to support him for a second term if he failed to fulfill those commitments. The Labour Party leader, however, argued that Nigeria has witnessed worsening conditions in several critical sectors.

He cited persistent power shortages, rising insecurity, increased kidnappings, and economic difficulties affecting millions of Nigerians.

Speaking on the situation, Obi maintained that accountability should remain a cornerstone of democratic governance.

He said that asking leaders to take responsibility for their performance would help strengthen democratic institutions and encourage future public office holders to prioritize service delivery.

The former presidential candidate concluded that a resignation by the President would send a strong message that leadership is a public trust rather than an entitlement, while also promoting a culture where elected officials are held accountable for their actions and promises.

Political analysts expect Obi’s remarks to generate widespread debate among supporters and critics alike as discussions continue over Nigeria’s economic and security challenges.
