Burial Etiquette Debate: Man Slams Guests for Eating at Late Actor Alexx Ekubo’s Funeral

A heated debate has erupted across Nigerian social media following a viral post by a man who publicly shamed guests for eating and drinking at the funeral of late Nollywood star, Alexx Ekubo.

The actor, who was laid to rest in Arochukwu, Abia State, on June 18, 2026, was honored by a massive gathering of friends, family, and industry colleagues. However, for one observer, the presence of catering services and refreshments at the event was a grave sign of cultural disrespect.

The critic argued that the act of consuming food at a funeral ceremony is inherently contradictory to the solemnity of mourning. He insisted that true respect for the deceased requires attendees to abstain from hospitality at the venue, suggesting that guests should either eat before arriving or wait until they return to their own homes.

“I saw people who went to Alex Ekubo's burial yesterday eating. There's nothing worst as this. The last thing I will ever do is go to a burial and eat. Never will I do that. How do I say I am mourning someone and still eat at the funeral?” he wrote.

The author went further, labeling the common Nigerian practice of serving food at burials as insensitive. He claimed that many attendees prioritize the "party" aspect of funerals—including the alleged practice of some guests bringing extra containers to take food home—over the actual purpose of paying respects to the departed.

He concluded by stating his personal code of conduct for such events: “All the burial I have attended; no matter how hungry I am, I will never eat or drink there. If you bring food, I will ask you to pass it to the next person; if you bring a drink, I will use my head to nod a NO to the person. Haba!”
